When visiting the ancient temple of chilly Snowpoint City, don’t forget to wear warm clothing and mind the deep snow!

I wanted to do a winter themed song next that is not too complicated so I could get it done in time. The only winterly songs I could come up with were Snowpoint City, Ice Path, Cold Storage and some PMD 2 songs that apparently appear in special episodes I haven’t played yet. Originally, I wanted to start DPPt with a "better" song but I might as well start with something more unusual.

Making the song was a lot of fun the entire time. After my first try of using arpeggios in the GoT Main Theme turned out horribly, I dared try it again as I thought arpeggios would fit well with the song and I think this time they sound quite good. For the sleigh bells, I used a high noise noise at first, but I wasn’t satisfied with it as it didn’t really sound like sleigh bells and it’s not a winterly song without proper sleigh bells. So I used the DPCM channel for the first time. I extracted the original sleigh bell sample from the game and imported it into a DPCM instrument but I was surprised by how badly it sounds, from other people’s use of the DPCM channel for percussion I expected something better. Maybe the sleigh bell sound is too high and subtle and it works better with deeper and clearer sounds. Anyway, I think it still sounds better than just a noise noise, so I used it. When I was experimenting with sounds for a doorbell jingle that was supposed to be used in Last Update, I found that "0 0 -12 -12" arpeggio envelopes (alternating between a note and the same note one octave lower every other tick) sound quite good. I used them for some of the arpeggios here as I thought the sound fits very well. Initially, I used a dual-channel echo but the sounds overlapped very badly, so I changed it to single-channel echo which sounds great for these slow and spread out notes.

I might not be that good yet but I’m comfortable and experienced enough now to have a lot of fun working in FamiTracker and that means I’ll keep doing it and keep improving. I only had self-doubts and thought that the song will be horrible and I should stop making 8-bit covers a couple of times for a short duration this time. It’s also incredibly interesting to analyse the songs.

In respect of the integration of the drawing into the fideo, I didn’t really have an idea what to draw. All I could come up with was snow, annoying deep snow, the view of the "city" as it appears in the games, Candice, the temple and Abomasnows and I didn’t know what to do with these boring things. Then I asked Amarizo what Snowpoint City makes him think of and he also mentioned a lot of things from the anime while I completely forgot the anime. Then I told him what I thought of and he replied that it would have been great if one could ride Mamoswines through the deep snow like in XY. That gave me the idea to piece some of the gathered things together to a scene of Dawn and Lucas on their way to the temple while Lucas is almost completely covered up by the deep snow (that also means I only have to draw the head) while Dawn simply rides on her Mamoswine and amusedly looks down to him. There would be lots of trees in the background with Abomasnow hidden between them and at least one building to the side that looks like in the anime. I also wanted to put Candice in somehow but neither did I have an idea how to put her in that scene nor did I have enough time to draw more.

Unlike most of Spinda’s Café’s drawing, this one was mostly fun. I have no idea how to draw good looking clouds though which is unfortunate because clouds can be so pretty. I looked at some of my favourite pixel artist’s work but I couldn’t imitate their clouds at all. So I just tried something else and made the edges a bit fluffy. This is also my first time drawing a human in more than 24 × 24 pixels and in a not so easy pose as well. I think it turned out alright, though I spent hours on Dawn’s legs. How does one draw someone sitting on something as wide as Mamoswine? Maybe I should have made her kneel instead but I don’t think it looks like someone is properly riding an animal when they are kneeling on their back instead of sitting like on a horse.

Also, in Platinum, Dawn’s winter outfit has pink hair clips while in the anime she uses yellow hairclips in her regular and winter outfit, at least according to the screenshots I looked at for reference. Additionally, in Dawn’s main illustration for Platinum it looks like her coat either has a hole in it’s sleeve for her Pokétch to fit through or this weird rectangular thing is some kind of holder for a Pokétch. Certainly an interesting observation.

While I’m writing this, it’s 5:00 in the morning and the fideo has been rendering for hours how. For some reason, my CPU is only used by 20 % even though Resolve usually uses 100 % of all cores for rendering and is really fast. My sleep schedule is completely messed up now and tomorrow after lunch I have to fix and accelerate my grandfather’s computer and I still have to get some programs and boot USB drives ready. I knew it was a bad idea to tell them I could do it this saturday, though I promised to do it soon for a very long time. Maybe I should change the fideo publish day from friday to saturday. I really need to get some sleep and stop getting fideos done so late and sacrificing a lot of sleep to do so. I’ve also spent some time again trying to come up with a better and unique name for myself, as I have for months. I think I want to do a complete redesign again with a new unique name, new unique profile picture and of course a new intro and outro that are much shorter than the current ones. I just can’t find a name that sounds nice to me, that I feel like fits for me and that is short, easy to remember, easy to pronounce and pronounced the same way in at least English and German. Link is just perfect as it fulfills all those conditions, except that it’s not unique. And I still haven’t finished the description of Last Update. The one time I release a fideo on time and put a placeholder in the description link instead of postponing the fideo for hours to write my novel first, I keep postponing finishing the description instead. Heavy will now get sleep. Why did Raptor Relative Clause not give me sleep for Christmas. Last night, I dreamt it was a ×0.2 weekend in ARK.
