I’m rather atwitter at the thought of this song in 8-bit form!
Animal Crossing: Wild World, along with Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training, was my first game for my first console, a white DS lite. I played it a lot and have many good memories of it. I remember playing it in bed sometimes and falling asleep while doing so, waking up the next day not only to an empty DS with all progress lost, but to be greeted by Resetti as well. The museum was my favourite place and I loved gathering exhibits. Fossils were the most interesting to me, followed by fish. Insects were alright but I didn’t care about the paintings. These old paintings, that are indeed quite impressive from a technical view, were the only topic in art class at school, so until a couple of years ago I thought I hated art and found it boring. But then, thanks to the interwebs, I realised that there are many other forms of drawing arts and I do actually like some of them a lot. If only I had realised that earlier. The museum’s music is very great and nostalgic as well, my favourite versions are fossils and paintings. Blathers was one of my favourite characters, I always enjoyed talking to him and related to his sleep cycle and sleepiness. The observatory was amazing as well, I was really sad that they removed it in New Leaf. Also, I always thought it would be great to have a flora museum to collect all flowers, trees etc. in one place. The insect area is a little like that, but I would like a proper one. For New Horizons, I wish that they bring back the observatory and add a flora section.
For quite a while I’ve had Wild World on my list of nostalgic 8-bit covers. I wanted to start with the title theme as I absolutely love it but now that I have a time problem even more than usual, I thought I could quickly cover the simple but great museum theme. Also for quite a while, I’ve had the idea to animate Blathers in the typical idle standing pose to the beat, similar to Spinda’s Càfê. The song’s bar amounts are interestingly not the same for all versions. Some are 3 bars long and some 4 bars. I could have used 12 bars for each version, but that would have made the whole song too long. Instead, I made each frame 4 bars long and used either 3 frames shortened to 3 bars each for 9 bars total, or I used 2 full frames for 8 bars total. The mysterious ticking noise and the Watteau tank sound were interesting to make and good practice for noise channel usage other than regular percussion. The bug and fish parts are just the main melody, quieter or with water sounds. To make them more interesting, I added a dual-channel echo since the other channels were free. I also tried to make a single-channel echo for the other parts, but it didn’t sound subtle enough. I wasn’t sure if the noise part for the fish part is good or annoying, but without it it would be too boring and maybe it’s something different and interesting. For the paintings part, I had the idea to spice it up a little by adding little trills. I love the sound of trills and they sound fancy and classical in my opinion, so it fits perfectly.
I love architecture and I would love to draw buildings more often, but I hate having to make like 1000 vanishing point lines and drawing according to them. They look quite great though and, especially in pixel form, result in interesting patterns. Drawing the room was very annoying. Making backgrounds like this would be much easier in some kind of pixel art compatible 3d modelling programme, maybe I should look for one. The upper part of the skull looks like a TF2 Scattergun to me. I don’t like how Blathers turned out, he surpassed the quality "shit" but he doesn’t quite look how he’s supposed to look. For the thumbnail, I drew him again from the front in a more interesting pose and that drawing turned out alright. Maybe I just needed two tries to get him right. Unfortunately, there is not enough time to draw the animated version again.
I’m really looking forward to New Horizons. It seems that they made a lot of changes and improvements this time and not just the same game as New Leaf seemed to me. If only Pokémon games were as brave with changes and innovation as New Horizons, Breath of the Wild and the 3D Mario series. Unfortunately, I won’t have time to play New Horizons for a while. The first half of March is almost over and I still haven’t started with the annual April fideo. And yesterday the Archives Event started a month early, so I won’t be able to play it. I don’t like the Overwatch PvE modes much anyway though, MvM in TF2 is so much better. And I wanted to have at least the new intro, outro and name change ready for the April fideo. Will I ever get everything done? Good question. There also seems to be a lot going on at the moment, in the global world as well as in my personal world. The tortoise situation hasn’t improved much, unfortunately. But helping and making others happy, animals and humans, is very important and I will never stop doing so and always live up to my principles. Just like Chelsea Manning, who unfortunately attempted suicide again but was fortunately released alive now, with a fine sum that is fitting for a former digital subject woman with subject understanding. Though of course completely outrageous. I wish her the best of luck. And you, who are reading this at the present moment, I wish you health and fun during quarantine. Our bodies might have to be apart, but, especially thanks to the interwebs, our minds can be just as close to each other. Stay happy and send someone a :). :)
