1.
Good morning, I’m Jeff from the Overwatch team, very excited to be here with an awesome Developer Update, because we are introducing the 32nd hero to Overwatch today, on March 32nd. Looks confused. I have this terrible feeling of déjà vû. Quiet for a bit. Anyway, today on "Developer Update with Jeff", we examine the new hero Link. He is a brand new character, a lot of you probably haven’t heard of him before, but he has a really cool backstory, so we want to talk a little bit about that and introduce you to how Link came to be.

2.
So, Link was born on a beautiful farm in Ordon village, a small village on a secluded island. As every firstborn in his family, he was supposed to take over the family’s farm one day. Now, he loved nature and animals but he was never happy with the life his family had planned for him. Eventually, he left the village and his family behind and ventured through the lands with his horse Epona in search of himself and his true passions, both of which he had been denied his whole life. During his travels, he uncovered parts of his personality that he was never allowed to live out and he also discovered a passion for music.

3.
One day, he played his beloved Ocarina in the forest and a mysterious old lady called Impa took notice of his beautiful melodies. She invited him to her house nearby in the forest and told him of an old legend. There is a powerful blade of evil’s bane and it is the only weapon capable of breaking the divine seal protecting the demise that will overcome this world. The blade can only be found and taken by the one playing the melody of courage. Link has always been very interested in old legends and so he went on many adventures to find the Master Sword. Eventually, he found it and discovered that he also had a passion for the way of the sword.

4.
As you guys know from last year’s Developer Update, when Ganondorf tried to take the Triforce, it broke into its three pieces. The pieces each chose the being that represented them the most, the piece of power chose Ganondorf and the piece of wisdom chose Zelda. However, they were unaware which hand chose the third piece in their band, the Triforce of Courage, and both of them want to get the other pieces. Zelda, on her quest to find the one with the third piece, and Link, on his quest to self-discovery, eventually crossed paths. Her wisdom and magical abilities immediately told her that there is something special about Link. He insisted that he is not that courageous but eventually,

5.
Zelda revealed the Triforce of Courage on the back of his left hand. She didn’t ask him to leave the Triforce piece to her yet because she thought that their pieces were safer apart as long as Ganondorf still has the Triforce of Power. Instead, she offered him to join Overwatch. Link was chosen by the Triforce of Courage and the Master Sword, which is probably the only weapon that might be able to pierce the Triforce of Power’s protection, so he could prove very useful in the war against Ganondorf and his 'bunch of evil Omnics'. Looks to the left. 'Sorry.' Link accepted because he wanted to help saving the world from the upcoming crisis.

6.
Well, shortly after, the Omnics attacked the main Overwatch facility and the Second Omnic Crisis begins. So, things are getting really serious now but even with his little experience, he is improving quickly and a super valuable part of Overwatch. Now, a lot of you are wondering about the gameplay of Link, and it's probably the thing that I am the most excited about. First off, he's a damage, and we really need another damage carrier, uh, character in Overwatch. Not only is he a damage, but he's what we call a mêlèé damage. So, you know Reinhardt currently uses a hammer, there's Doomfist, and Genji even has a sword.

7.
But Link is a proper melee damage. His main weapon of attack is the Master Sword. Now, he has a defensive ability as his primary ability, the Hylian Shield. When he uses it, he puts out the shield in front of himself, and he blocks all of the incoming damage that is coming from the front, but only for a very short duration. The cooldown is very short as well, so this ability is intended to reactively and skillfully block single enemy attacks. He also has a fun roll movement ability. It has a short cooldown, so he can use it frequently to move around and to avoid getting hit in the first place.

8.
Also, unlike McCree, Link can change the direction he’s rolling in but his roll is a little bit slower and he can’t roll backward. His E ability is the Jump Attack. Link leaps forward and hits the enemy with his sword as he lands. And it causes not only tremendous damage, but it will stun that enemy because we from the Overwatch team felt like we need more stuns. Now, don’t freak out, we made it fair and balanced by making it predictable, it is counterable in the sense that you can move out of the way. When he uses this ability on an enemy lying on the ground, he will stab them instead and kill them outright.

9.
Now, the thing you're probably wondering and caring the most about is: What is Link’s ultimate ability? He has one of the funnest ones in the game. First, he takes out his Ocarina and plays Epona’s song to call her and to let everybody on the whole map know his location. Then, she appears and Link rides her and can swing his sword from her back. He can run people over and hit them with his sword and they will be pushed forward along with him, so he can hit them multiple times. Inside of the Master Sword lives a spirit called Fi and whenever Link is at low health, Fi will help him and fire a Sword Beam that is a sword-shaped projectile with every sword swing.

10.
Now, he has some other really cool abilities he can do as well, called Hidden Skills. He can charge up a Spin Attack by holding the crouch button and then pressing primary fire, doing a lot of devastating damage to enemies in a big radius. If he jumps forward on an enemy and presses primary fire, he will perform the Helm Splitter which makes him jump over the enemy while hitting them from above, dealing additional damage to armour. Rolling sideways around an enemy and pressing primary fire lets him use a minimum charge Spin Attack behind them, also known as the Back Slice. Um, and lastly, pressing primary fire at the end of a forward roll lets Link perform a stab while getting up.

11.
This is very useful to chase after low health enemies or to engage in a fight. Now, the intention for Link is for him to be a very fun, dynamic, high-mobility melee damage, and we think he's a ton of fun to play. For our highly skilled players, you're going to find a lot of nuance and fun in mastering his sword techniques. He can use the roll, Helm Splitter and Back Slice to confuse the enemy between hits and to avoid getting hit in addition to blocking with his shield. And for this reason, we rated his star difficulty as three stars, so, you know, one of the hardest, uh, type heroes to play.

12.
Now, as I mentioned earlier, the main Overwatch facility is under attack and Link’s first Overwatch mission is to escort some very important stuff to hide it safely in Hyrule Castle. So, for this year’s Archives event, there will be a new mission featuring, yes, you guessed it, Link along with, uh, Ana, Pharah and Orisa on their way to Hyrule Castle. After the event, we will add Hyrule Castle to the Quickplay, uh, the Quickplay rotation and to the Competitive rotation as a Payload or Escort map. Uh, we know that you'd be very upset if there was another Escort map and not just new Assault maps, which some of you refer to as 2CP, we also know how much you like our Horizon Lunar Colony map, but we think it’s very good.

13.
We also want you to know that we care about feedback and we take it really seriously. Now, you might have been wondering why the Archives event started a month early this year and why there was no new mission. Well, with many people quarantined, we released the event early so you could have fun playing the old missions and unlocking things while we were still working on the new hero, map and mission. Um, they will be going live right now to avoid those really frustrating PTR feedback comments. Now, I know that there's some of you who are thinking "But Jeff, you just said you care about feedback and take it really seriously".

14.
I was totally kidding by the way, um, I’ll leave it up to you which one I’m talking about. But Link from Skyward Sword will be on the Experimental card soon, along with radical gameplay changes like movement acceleration and fall damage. This special Archives event is going to run for four more weeks this time. Now, we know how much you all love Mei. *leastplayedheroeslook* We don’t believe that she needs buffs. Actually, she might get, uh, you know, some changes to make her weaker. I'm gonna be vague about some of this because I can't reveal everything that we're working on, but her primary fire will be replaced. Now, I’m quarantined as well, I’m not actually in the usual Developer Update room, I’m at home in front of a blue screen blue chroma key effect because Windows 10 sucks.

15.
Uh, forgive the *bad quality*, I don’t know how to record and edit properly but I can’t send the recording to our video editor because the ancient telephone cables are overwhelmed with everybody suddenly using them for these new so-called interwebs. My beloved wife called Petra, Petra is beautiful, is sending a telegram to complain to our provider right now. We hope you guys stay healthy and enjoy the new content as much as we do. I’ll move to a deserted island with cute animals now to get away from this mess, I’m talking about the Overwatch team by the way, um, and finally finish Breath of the Wild. And play a proper shooter like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Take care.

Notes

ABILITY IDEAS
Q: ocarina, play song of courage -> ? something that makes him more courageous -> the ocarina is an important part of link and his backstory
Q: ocarina, select one of multiple songs or play them manually -> make it dark, make it rain which obstructs vision and sound, sleep someone, teleport somewhere, call epona, heal, get different effects possibly linked to different armours or that recolour him -> too confusing for new players
Q: transform to wolf -> too similar to ganondorf, not easy to do in practice and probably not that interesting or skillful
Q: mortal draw -> courage to recklessness, sheathe sword and shield and press m1 on someone to deal 150 damage + stun? -> stuns are bad and unfair for the stunned
Q: midna?
Q: ocarina, play eponas song -> epona appears, link jumps on epona and rides with his sword swinging / bow -> impressive, probably fun, difficult to do in practice, no risk, whats the upside other than getting out of spawn quicker but roll also allows that, no skill except maybe for difficult/bad horse movement but that could be frustrating
E: jump attack -> is it worth existing when the roll attack already allows for quicker movement with damage at the end? -> make roll attack weaker and jump attack stronger? knockback and stun as its linear and predictable?

link was born on a beautiful farm in ordon village on a secluded island and was supposed to take over the familys farm one day, as every firstborn in his family. he loved nature and animals, however, he was never happy with the future his family had planned for him. eventually, as a young adult, he left the village and his family behind and ventured through the lands in search of himself and his true passions, both of which he had been denied his whole life. during his travels, he did not only uncover parts of his personality that he was never allowed to live out but he also discovered a passion for music. one day, he played his ocarina, which his only friend in the village crafted and gave him as farewell gift, in the woods and a very old mysterious lady took notice of the beautiful melodies that stemmed from his ocarina. she invited him to her shed and told him of an old legend. there is a blade of evils bane. this sword is the only weapon capable of breaking the divine seal protecting the demise that will come over this world. this sword can only be found and taken by the one playing the melody of courage. he has always been interested in legends and wanted to find it. eventually, he actually found the master sword and discovered that he also had a passion for the way of the sword.
as you know from last years dev update, when ganondorf tried to take the triforce, it broke into its three pieces. the pieces each chose the being that resembles their trait the most, two of them being ganondorf with the triforce of power and zelda with the triforce of wistom. however, they were unaware which hand chose the third piece in their band, the triforce of courage, and tried to find it. zelda on her quest to find the one with the third triforce piece and link on his quest to self-discovery eventually crossed paths. her wisdom and magical abilities immediately told her that there is something extraordinary about link. even though he insisted that he is not at all courageous and values other things like wisdom and kindness much more, zelda eventually revealed the triforce of courage resting in his left hand. zelda didnt ask him to leave the triforce of courage to her yet, however, as their pieces would be safer split apart as long as ganondorf is alive. instead, she offered him to join overwatch since, having been chosen by the triforce of courage and the master sword, which is the only weapon that might be able to penetrate the triforce of powers protection, he could prove very useful in the war against ganondorf and the omnics he took control over. he accepted because he wanted to help saving the world.
second omnic crisis begins by the omnics destroying the overwatch headquarters, now they use the old castle as new headquarters -> new map
what happens now

JEFFTEXT
terrible feeling of dejavu
because we from the overwatch team felt like we need more stuns but dont freak out we made it fair by putting it on a predictable and dodgeable ability
he plays the song of courage on his ocarina so everyone on the whole map knows that he ulted
he can use the roll, helm splitter and back slice to dodge enemy fire and disorient them and attack
fun dynamic melee dps character with focus on movement and cool combo abilities
but thats not all, in addition to the regular abilities he also has some special abilities or combos that he can do, so called hidden skills which he learned from a golden spirit wolf on his travels
brand new not only in the story of overwatch but also as a fighter as he hasnt fought ever before
experimentation & hero pools: cant say nerf (somebody gets nerfed or maybe link) (but he has said nerf)
link from ss will be on the experimental branch soon
All of these changes are coming very soon. We think they're very good.
quarantined
will happily play along and make you feel like the hero
avoid those really frustrating
rate as 3 star difficulty
but jeff you just said you
counter strike global offensive
feedback like that we want you to know that we care about it and that we take it really seriously -> avoid frustrating comments -> but jeff you just said you take it very seriously -> that was just a joke / totally kidding btw
we know how much you all love mei -> least played heroes look -> mei nerf but cant say nerf?
I know one of your favorite things to talk about whenever we have a seasonal event is new skins.
hammond swing as music conducting
we had a ton of fun with this ability during our testing
jeff and tim chuckle

DESCRIPTION
idea during introducing ganondorf to remake the bad but first fideo as it would be a waste not to make link properly with all the improvements and other additions in the later fideos like story from zelda series, ow and own ideas (and me) combined to something new and map
2017, when we from the Overwatch team first introduced Link to the game, we had no idea what we were doing. Now, we pretend that never happened and brand the rework as a new hero. Happy March 32nd! (Subtitles available)
calling the role damage is stupid and leads to funny sentences like "triple damage" or "he is a damage" you wouldnt call healers heal or healing either would you but i guess its better than calling it damage per second
for the first introducing link i didnt even write a script or plan in any way i just made jeff say stuff as i went along which is why its heavily based on the orisa update
i need to change my life philosophy, im becoming what i never wanted to become, i cant even enjoy free time anymore because playing games watching stuff or reading books feels like im wasting my time
i used 3 different editing programmes, that also means i could only use a small amount of previously cut words
workshop and replays are a dream for devupdates
using resolve was a dream, it never crashed instead of every 10 minutes like fideo deluxe and it was running pretty smoothly, just zooming on the timeline took a bit but the time spent in fideo deluxe taught me to press ctrl s after every single action in every programme so that was a valuable lesson, a couple of sfm crashes though
olafs death, tortoises in dispair but i cant help them no matter how much i try which accentuates the problems between my mum and me, terry jones death, rockmums death, nesss death, firus, julian, chelsea, most extreme stress for a fideo yet
had to "waste" time during fideo creation with tortoises and other smaller stuff
i planned to release the usual developer update and in addition an 8bit cover on april first
i thought there might be a chance that 100 people will have subscribed on april first and it will be a special fideo in multiple ways, its the biggest yearly event fideo, a remake of my first fideo and it comes out for the 100th suckscriber but suddenly someone suckscribed every couple of days, i hope they actually suckscribed because they want to watch my fideos unlike the vast majority of the previous suckscribers
its thursday and im at my mind and bodys end save me
share workshop code to test
hitscan bullets are invisible as well when the player is
i made genji link and i almost forgot that genji has higher movement speed but i adjusted it
rolling off and very quickly back towards ledges is an interesting "ledge jumping" mechanic (like auto jumping from ledges in traditional zelda games?), jumping while getting up keeps the momentum in the air similar to doom
either no hud and no health bars or hud and health bars, when freely spectating there is at least no player hud, recorded if possible both, i had to watch out that the health bars and names dont touch the hud elements to be removed, extremely close with orisa when she gets damaged the white things are cut off, some touched the top hud part but thats acceptable so thats why that part is different sometimes
replaced useless humans with perfectly programmed bots
applying damage with a script which is the only way for custom attacks lets the victim not flinch or anything so i had to use an invisible bastion
three phases of jeff voice creation: first 2 days its new and exciting, then it gets tedious and becomes a nightmare with my thoughts drifting off and me wanting to or doing other things that waste my time like checking youtube or twitter, after more than a week i embrace it and become an efficient organic jeff voice generating programme with no desires and no boredom, its also less frustrating when half of the words have already been used
vsc ow addon
ana bots keep spamming e when they are dead and have been oneshot
i didnt think i would get it ready in time, i guess using resolve instead of fideo deluxe saved a lot of time
i cant imagine what its like to be able to just take a walk in nature, read a book or play a game without having to think about fideos, being in the here and now
time for me to rework all of my previous fideos and never do anything new again
dolphin crashes
its incredible that no matter when i start the big yearly fideos i always get them done just in time, except for gos i guess
sfm did animations completely myself used no artificial additives or preservatives of any kind like instead of dag, ctrl mwheel shift mwheel functions switched in motion editor and graph editor
wanted to use tp model from hw but after a while i wanted to pose the fingers and realised that they dont have bones for some reason the hand can only be moved as a whole so i unfortunately had to use the main model from hw which has higher polygon fingers but i like the way it looks less i love tp link
for some scenes i needed an additional greenscreen and on the last day when i put the non-jeff-scenes together in resolve, i realised that one of the lights was obstructed by that greenscreen so i had to move it and render those animations again
defect passive recording, deluxe -> aseprite
there was no perfect chroma key colour for some scenes so i used red and used the same clip twice again, one with the background and the red loftwing keyed out and one with just the shield in so it would fill out the gap
i was looking forward to getting this fideo done so much and i thought it would be amazing but now that its done i dont care about it anymore and dont feel a sense of accomplishment and want to get to the next fideo
in the zelda update i tried to put a lot of unnecessary stuff in to make it more like a real developer update, in ganondorf i did that less but this time everything is necessary or humorous and it still got way longer and hopefully more entertaining

INGAME
workshop viewmodels off
mccree roll movement control + speed
cut from shot to hit to make shot tracer invisible as last year
make damage with workshop hitscan checks and damage for no tracer
E fast hanzo leap
E2 land with shift held, jump back and let go of shift
passive: 50 hp
Q: is 3rd person too far away from enemy (sword range)
default team colours
Q: invisible player walks forward and makes an attack that deals damage and pushes forward, spectated in 3rd person looking a bit down to the right (if no such hero exists, melee for dmg + push ability? or use workshop to add knockback to a 2 shots/s weapon?)
for projectile: first someone shoots a projectile with exact speed so i know how fast the edited in projectile has to be, then switches to soldier/ashe
create bnet group chat
credit consent
cut health bars in by recording twice
ocarina song from enemy teams view, hearing it in the distance, cut to link riding around the corner to the bridge
but riding around the corner doesnt work because of third person side view so start from the stairs or cut the turn out
Q: interact: bot1 shoots, bot2 impulse
dont let others names and health bars touch the edge hud elements, on kill cut to recording without hud?
is an invisible players flashbang invisible? if not look down or up as far away as possible so the flashbang is not visible

SFM
left-handed

2019-03-22 IDEAS
introducing link remastered, zelda finds link a simple fideo artist with the third triforce piece and recruits him for ow, he knows how to fight from playing brutal killer games and proves useful in the second omnic crisis that will decide which side gets the triforce, welcome its the year 2017? (because chronologically according to the new lore link is now the third character), hyrule castle grounds pl map -> move stuff to new secret overwach headquarters (or ordon village?), show comments of people loving 2cp and hating pl, introducing wrecking ball we also know how much you like lunar, a lot of you probably havent heard of him before but he has a really cool backstory

OTHER
bulb annotation overlays, ie first point market, second point main courtyard, third point side courtyard
tp sound effects
hud infinite ammo
put first version of jeffs text here as well to compare with the final version with all changes made during the editing of jeffs voice (mostly changes due to words jeff has or has not said before or because i discover interesting things he said that i want to use)

THINGS TO DO BEFORE RENDERING OR PUBLISHING
bad quality
blue screen
optical flow
censor sucktitles for yt
